AGM Glory G1S: High-performance Android phone with top-class thermal imaging camera

AGM released the Glory G1S, a rugged phone with an impressive thermal imaging camera, night vision camera, laser pointer and several other nice features. The durable phone is built like a tank, and when you first lift it out of its sleek packaging, you’ll immediately realize that it weighs a little more than your average Android phone.

At 315 grams, it weighs almost twice as much as popular Android devices like the Google Pixel 6a or the Samsung Galaxy 52A. The difference is partly explained by the protective case on the Glory G1S, which is said to withstand drops and falls from 1.5 meters and up to 30 minutes under 1.5 meters in water. When you add phones without a rugged protective case, you get closer to the weight of the AGM Glory G1S.

Our review sample came in a sleek box with an additional desk charger for faster charging.

As for the specifications, the AGM Glory G1S is powered by a Snapdragon 480 processor, 8 gigabytes of RAM and 128 gigabytes of storage, a 1080 x 2340 395 ppi 6.53 “60 Hz screen and a 5500 mAh battery. The Storage can be expanded with microSD cards, but this takes away one of the two nano-SIM slots of the device, Android 11 is the operating system, 5G is supported thanks to the Snapdragon 480 processor.

In case you are wondering which bands are supported:

GSM: B2, B3, B5, B8

CDMA: BC0, BC1, BC10

WCDMA: B1, B2, B4, B5, B6, B8, B19

LTE FDD: B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B7, B8, B12, B13, B17, B18, B19, B20, B25, B26, B28AB, B66

LTE TDD: B34, B38, B39, B40, B41

5G NR: n1, n2, n3, n5, n7, n8, n28, n41, n66, n77, n78

The dimensions of the phone are 172.80 x 82.80 x 18.40 mm. It features a fingerprint sensor and packs four different cameras. The main camera is a Sony IMX582 with 48MP; The night vision camera is 20 MP and 1 infrared LED, there is a 2 MP macro camera and a 16 MP selfie camera. The main camera might not beat the top cameras in Android phones, but the results are still very good and should be suitable for most users.

Here’s a snap I took with the phone’s main camera:

The default camera ratio is set to 4:3; Users can change it to a different ratio if they prefer.

The phone is water and dust resistant (IP68 and IP69K) and conforms to MIL-STD-810H, which means it has been drop tested from 1.5 meters. The phone passed all underwater tests I put it through.

The processor, RAM, storage and screen are fine for most use cases, but what sets this phone apart are features you won’t find on most Android phones. Take the heavy duty case. It looks sturdy, and when you pick it up you’re immediately convinced it could survive a tank rolling over it. While this needs testing, the lack of a tank compelled me to skip the test, but it’s clear the device has quite a bit to offer.

Its ruggedness makes it a great choice for outdoor and work-related tasks, and thanks to its battery, it’s well equipped to get you through the day without having to charge it halfway.

According to AGM, the Glory G1S is equipped with the best thermal imaging camera of any mobile phone. It has a maximum resolution of 256 x 192 and supports frame rates of up to 25 Hz. The camera measures temperatures between -20 and 550 degrees Celsius and is remarkably well equipped for a number of different tasks, which are of particular benefit to engineers. Tasks include finding overheated components and using them to diagnose HVAC systems.

Night vision is also included, and it’s a great addition too. While you can use the flashlight feature to get some light, using night vision is an option, especially in places where you don’t want to signal your location to the world.

In terms of performance, the G1S Glory is a solid phone. It’s not as powerful as top-of-the-line Android devices, but it’s well-equipped for most use cases. The volume of the device is excellent, much louder than Android phones. You may find that you turn down the volume on the device to 60% or even lower, otherwise it may be too loud. The AGM Glory G1S has a 3.5mm headphone jack, something you don’t find that often on smartphones anymore.

closing words

The standout feature of the AGM Glory G1S is its thermal imaging camera, but there’s a lot more you’ll love. It is a durable case that is ideal for outdoor environments as it is waterproof, dustproof and capable of surviving in 1.5m of water. It has a good sized battery and offers good performance for most of the tasks you perform on the device.

The AGM Glory G1S is available on the AGM website. The device is also listed on Amazon but not available at the time of writing. The retail price for the AGM Glory G1S is $699.
