If you’re a fan of small phones then the Asus Zenfone range of Android phones is probably already on your radar. The next thing we’re expecting is the Asus Zenfone 9, and it could launch anytime now.
This is the expected successor to the Asus Zenfone 8 that we saw in May 2021, and it could also arrive alongside a flip edition like this phone.
We’ve started hearing Asus Zenfone 9 rumors, but they’re not coming as quickly as the iPhone 14 leaks, so it’s not clear if it’s coming immediately or in the more distant future.
We’re collecting all the leaks and rumors we’re hearing about the Zenfone 9 for now, and you’ll find them below alongside a wish list of all the things we’d like to see in the upcoming Android.
In a nutshell
- What is it? The next Android flagship from Asus
- when is it out We don’t know – hopefully soon
- How much will it cost Probably around $629 (approx. £425 / AU$769)
Asus Zenfone 9: release date and price
We don’t know when the Asus Zenfone 9 will go on sale – that’s because the Zenfone 9 is late to that schedule while most phones launch annually.
The Zenfone 8 family was launched in May 2021, although it took a few months before it went on sale. But we would have expected the Zenfone 9 at this point if it had stuck to a rough annual schedule.
The Zenfone 8 was $629 (approx. Maybe the 9 could be a bit cheaper or more expensive, but not by much.
If you’ve got more cash to burn we could also see a flip version which would be more expensive and have a flip camera solution – we’ll have to see.
Asus Zenfone 9: leaks and rumors
We’ve only heard one major Asus Zenfone 9 leak – but it’s a massive one, as a marketing video for the phone was leaked.
Apparently the phone will feature a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset, a 4,300mAh battery, dual rear cameras (one of which has a gimbal function), a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, a 5.9-inch 120Hz Display and a 3.5mm headphone jack and an IP68 rating for protection. Oh, and it will apparently be available in shades of red, black, cream and blue.
It’s an odd video – the music fits so badly that we can’t help but feel like it’s a rough cut or something – but that tells us a lot about the phone.
Asus Zenfone 9: What we want to see
Here’s what we’d like to see in the Asus Zenfone 9 to make it a decent upgrade.
A telephoto lens
Despite the hefty price tag, the Asus Zenfone 8 doesn’t have a flagship camera suite – first and foremost, it doesn’t have a telephoto zoom lens.
That means if you want to zoom in while taking a photo, do it with digital zoom or crop. It’s a weak link in the Zenfone’s photography, meaning it can’t compete with some rivals at the same price point.
A lower price
The Zenfone 8 had a price that sat on the fence between mid-range and top-end, but its specs certainly fell in the former – the battery and camera specs in particular felt more like a mid-range phone.
We’re hoping the Zenfone 9 fixes that, either by bumping up the specs so the phone is more premium, or by dropping the price so it’s a competitive mid-range device.
Improved battery life
We found the Asus Zenfone 8’s battery life to be below average, as the 4,000 mAh power adapter didn’t last the device very long.
If the above leak is correct, the Zenfone 9 will get a 4,300mAh battery – but also a more powerful processor, so a larger battery may not result in longer battery life.
We’d like to see an even larger battery than 4,300mAh, or maybe some other tweaks to ensure the phone lasts long enough.
