Bruce Willis struggled on film set before sharing aphasia diagnosis, crew claims

The extent to which Bruce Willis struggled before going public with his aphasia diagnosis is brought to light.

Within the Los Angeles Times‘s synopsis of Hollywood producer Randall Emmett – who is facing abuse allegations and civil fraud claims – details Willis’ struggles with acting amid his communication difficulties due to the disorder. Emmett has hired Willis for two dozen films since 2006.

When shooting Midnight in switchgrass in Sept 2020, the action superstar from the Die Hard Franchise, now 67, couldn’t kick a door — take after take. Willis, fed his lines over an earphone because he couldn’t remember them, was coached through the scene by the voice on the other end. A stunt coordinator also attempted to guide him. However, Willis did not seem to understand that seven crew members present claimed the outlet.

Emmett, directing for the first time, also tried to emulate for Willis what he had to do for the scene. When that also failed, Emmett left the set in frustration, eyewitnesses claimed, and Willis stood by.

“Did I do something wrong?” he asked the crew.

Emmett – who is accused in the play of, among other things, offering work to actresses in exchange for sex (he denied the allegations) – reportedly called his then-fiancé, reality star Lala Kent, and exclaimed, “It’s just so sad. Bruce can’t remember any of his lines. He doesn’t know where he is.”

In the story, Emmett’s rep denied that he was aware of “a deterioration in Mr. Willis’s health” and denied speaking to Kent. Emmett went on to direct five more films with Willis over the next 15 months

Alicia Haverland, a prop master Midnight in switchgrasswhich came out in June 2021, told the outlet that Willis’ health issues were an open secret.

“Our stunt coordinator mentioned that he was having problems,” Haverland said. “Our first AD saw him struggling. One would have to be blind not to see how he struggled.”

This was announced by Willis’ lawyer Martin Singer Latin“My client continued to work after his medical diagnosis because he wanted and could work, just like many others with aphasia who are able to continue working. Because Mr. Willis appeared in these films, they were able to be funded which resulted in literally thousands of people finding work, many during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

In March, Willis’ family announced that he had been diagnosed with aphasia and was retiring from acting.

The family’s announcement came hours before the others Latin Story in progress detailing how aphasia was suspected by Willis’s associates for years. Nearly two dozen people who have been on set with him over the past few years have expressed concern about his well-being, particularly as he produces film after film – many of which have gone straight to VOD. Claims included that Willis had unexpectedly fired a blank loaded gun at the wrong cue, which the producer and gunsmith denied. Multiple established sources claimed he often appeared confused, once asking, “Why am I here?”

When Yahoo Entertainment spoke to Emmett about directing Willis last year switchgrass, he gave no indication at all that Willis had problems.

“As a producer, if I go on a set and see Bruce, I’ll hug him, sit in my chair, look straight at the director, and then we’ll go to dinner and I’ll go home,” he said at the time. “When I was directing and Bruce walked on the set, I was petrified! He’s a guy I’ve known for 15 years, but I had to speak to him in a very different light. If I didn’t like something, I would have to tell him. So it was a whole different psychology, but it ended up being better than I expected because he’s a giving actor.

He said Willis accepted the role “as a favor for me, not for the money he takes for all his other films. I mean, he’s Bruce Willis – he doesn’t need much guidance. That’s why I wanted to cast great actors: that’s half the battle. It’s not like I have to teach anyone how to act!”

The newest Latin The play describes how Willis’ many of his recent roles have been a big part of the success of Emmett’s production company, Emmett/Furla Oasis. The exposé really focuses on Emmett’s Hollywood businesses — and there are some disturbing allegations.

Through interviews and confidential documents, the outlet reports that several women accused Emmett of inappropriately stalking her, including one who claimed she was offered acting work in exchange for sexual favors. He has reportedly reached a $200,000 settlement with the woman, arranged by attorney Gloria Allred. Another woman claimed he sent her unsolicited pictures. It is alleged that he paid women to sign non-disclosure agreements to keep their alleged intimate relationships secret.

Kent, who Emmett split from last year, also claimed in the piece that Emmett attacked her and pushed her to the ground when she asked to see his phone after he connected to other women. She also claimed to the outlet that she was offered $14,000 early in their relationship — when he was still married to actress Ambyr Childers — but she turned it down. Emmett denied the allegations against him in the article – claiming Kent staged a “smear campaign” against him.
