Charles Barkley on Lakers’ hiring of Darvin Ham: If your coach is the same age as your players, your team is not gonna be any good

Darvin Ham is the new head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, and a lot of people are excited about what he’s going to bring to the organization. However, Hall of Famer Charles Barkley seems to think the hire is not going to move the needle for LA He recently explained his thinking. “Well I’m glad Darvin got an opportunity ’cause he’s paid his dues,” Barkley said. “He’s a nice guy. We’ll have to see what kind of coach he is. But listen, if one of your coaches is close to the same age as your players, your team is not gonna be any good anyway. The Lakers, they got a serious dilemma on their hands. Their best player’s gonna be 40. Anthony Davis has never been healthy. Obviously, Russ (Russell Westbrook) is gonna be there one more year, so what’s really bad about the situation — next year is gonna be the same as this year. And then LeBron just gonna be a year older, and then they’ll have Russ off the books.”

Unsolicited advice to Darvin Ham: If Russell Westbrook sends you a bottle of champagne to congratulate your new job, for the love of all that is holy, send him a thoughtfully written thank-you note. AK – 3:34 PM

Ime Udoka’s success is likely to encourage teams to seek first-time head coaches like himself who have played the game and paid their dues as assistants. Darvin Ham may have benefited from this. #Celtics #Lakers12:59 AM

More on this storyline

John Karalis: Al Horford on his former assistant coach Darvin Ham getting the Lakers job: “Darvin is about as good a guy as you’re going to see, a big competitor. Extreme competitor. The Lakers are really lucky to have a guy like him. He’s the kind of guy that you want.” -via Twitter @John_Karalis / June 1, 2022 Anthony Slater: Steve Kerr on Warriors-Celtics: “What I like is it’s two teams that are mostly built with patience and through the draft and development, player development and continuity. I think it’s good for the sport.” -via Twitter @anthonyVslater / June 1, 2022 This is what Draymond Green said on his podcast about Darvin Ham’s influence on their shared hometown: “Ultimately, what you’re looking for is hope. That’s the thing that gets lost when you come from a place like Saginaw and you don’t see much outside of that world and you only see what Saginaw has to offer. What you lose first is you lose hope … When Darvin Ham won an NBA championship with the Detroit Pistons, it gave me hope that I could do that too.” -via For The Win / June 1, 2022
