Glamorous Liza Minnelli, 76, hits the town for a night out with friends

Liza Minnelli looked glamorous in the first sighting of the revered star since her controversial performance at this year’s Oscars for a night out with friends.

DailyMail.com spotted legendary entertainer Saturday looking glamorous in a black sequined jacket, red scarf, black trousers and leather shoes.

Liza, daughter of Hollywood great Judy Garland, was escorted in a wheelchair. Two friends were seen helping the actress get into a black SUV.

This is Liza’s first public appearance since she took the stage at the Oscars in March to present the Best Picture award alongside Lady Gaga.

Liza’s close friend, musician Michael Feinstein, claimed she was supposed to sit in a director’s chair on stage, but was instead “forced” to appear in a wheelchair, leaving her nervous and “confused”.

Feinstein, 65, appeared on SirusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show in April and claimed Liza was “sabotaged” by Oscars organizers at the last minute.

Feinstein, an acclaimed jazz singer, said he attended the Oscars with Liza. He claimed that she wanted to give her presentation sitting down because of back pain.

“You know, the whole thing was, she was sabotaged. That’s a terrible word, but she only agreed to appear at the Oscars if she would be in the director’s chair because she has back problems,” he explained.

He said the cabaret star wanted to look as strong as possible in front of TV audiences.

“She said, ‘I don’t want people out there to see me limp,'” he said. “She said, ‘You know, I want to look good. I don’t want people to worry about me.”

Although the plan seemed to have worked, Feinstein claimed that Will Smith’s shocking slap in the face by Chris Rock backstage created a mess and forced Minnelli out of her preferred chair.

“And then literally, literally five minutes before she continued, sitting back there in the director’s chair, and because everyone, I guess they were all shaken up by everything that had happened before, the stage manager said, ‘Well, you needs to be in a wheelchair,” Liza pleaded,” he continued.

“She said, ‘No, I won’t be seen in a wheelchair in front of everyone. I won’t do that. I refused to do this.”

Feinstein claimed the Oscars organizers threatened not to let Minnelli attend — and potentially force Gaga to do it alone — unless she gave in to her demands at the last minute.

“Well, it’s either that or nothing,” the staff reportedly told her.

Feinstein said he asked Liza how she planned to proceed, and she replied, “I will.”

However, he claimed she was “so shattered” by the confrontation that she was “confused.”

“She was nervous. I mean, and it made her look like she was out. And she was just so shocked that it was,” he continued.

Liza’s rare public appearance comes amid celebrations of the 50th anniversary of her 1972 classic Cabaret, which earned her a Best Actress Oscar and helped her step out of the shadow of her famous parents, but Feinstein suggested that the Oscar fiasco that might have spoiled what should have been a glorious moment for her.

“Can you imagine suddenly being forced to be seen by millions of people in a way you don’t want to be seen? This happened to her. And she was very disappointed that that happened and it wasn’t settled,” he said.

“So she’s doing really well and it’s a shame it has come to this. She was very disappointed.”

Although Liza may not have performed as she had hoped, the audience was visibly excited to see her and gave her a standing ovation when she took the stage with Lady Gaga.

‘Do you see that? The crowd loves you,” the Poker Face singer said as she held up the winner’s card.

During the presentation, Liza sometimes had trouble reading her lines, even though Gaga helped her.

“I got you,” she said sweetly to the stage and screen veteran, to which Minnelli replied, “I know.”

Viewers at home applauded Gaga’s kindness on social media, particularly in contrast to Will Smith’s shocking slap and screaming profanity earlier in the evening, calling it a “highlight of the night.”

Liza’s former rep Scott Gorenstein said he was approached by Oscars officials who were hoping to bring the legend to the show to celebrate cabaret’s 50th anniversary.

“I wanted to remind people who she is,” Gorenstein said of his client, who has kept a low profile in recent years with her last acting appearance in 2013’s Arrested Development.

“Liza is living her best life and doesn’t need to be in front of the camera,” Gorenstein said. “She has been under tremendous pressure all her life to perform in front of an audience. The past few years have allowed her to relax and enjoy another phase of her life. She had some health problems.’

He continued, “However, if an opportunity arises that says, ‘Would Liza Minnelli like to present the Oscar for best picture with Lady Gaga?’ the quiet life goes out the window! Liza is a legend and she deserves to be at the Academy Awards, so I brought it up to her people and recommended she do it. I said it would be a historic occasion.’
