EXCLUSIVE: It will be Michael Shannon’s directorial debut eric larue, a film based on the play by Brett Neveu released in 2002 by A Red Orchid Theater in Chicago, where Shannon is a charter member. Neveu also adapts the script.
The film was originally supposed to be shot in Arkansas. But since the fall of the Supreme Court Deer vs Wade Act 180 of 2019, which bans almost all abortions, including cases of rape and incest, the filmmakers have pulled out of Arkansas and will now be shooting in and around Wilmington, NC.
for Neveu, Eric LarueAs a play, it was created in 1999 in response to the mass shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado. The play premiered at the Red Orchid in 2002. AAlmost 15 years after its debut, Shannon directed the play traitor – this is a new retelling by Neveus An Enemy of the People – when a gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. This filming led to Neveu adapting his original play into the feature film, which will be directed by Shannon.
The film follows Janice, the mother of 17-year-old Eric, who shot and killed three of his classmates. As Janice faces meeting the mothers of the other boys and a long-delayed visit to her son in prison, the story is not about the violence but about what we think and do to survive trauma.
“Eric Larue has so much to say about our country, about the way we try (sometimes quite clumsily) to deal with the trauma of life here, which is so insidious because most of the time it doesn’t show itself openly and concretely.” said Shannon. “Like most great stories Eric Larue plays at the macro and micro level at the same time. As soon as I read the script, I knew I had to direct. I saw it. I heard it. i could feel it And I wanted to make sure it got just the right polish in all its aspects, because after all, it’s an extraordinarily delicate thing.
“I find it interesting,” he added, “to partner with artists who have the most vivid imaginations, the most stringent yet empathetic sense of morality, and the most passionate and rigorous disciplines to create worlds and stories that add to our experience.” and contribute to our understanding of what it means to be human today and especially in this country.”
