We’ve found the 7 best new movies to watch online while you’re nursing your holiday weekend hangover. And it all starts with a movie releasing on Prime Video this weekend (and didn’t make the previous installment of this column).
Yes, the Lady Gaga-led House of Gucci is finally on one of the best streaming services. A tale of ambition, betrayal and seizures (of both style and outrage), House of Gucci no longer requires a purchase or rental fee. Meanwhile, a Johnny Depp movie that might remind you of the actor’s best work is coming to Hulu.
However, this week is mostly dedicated to Netflix original movies. A true crime documentary about a creepy and mysterious photo of what appears to be a father and daughter begins. Then we have a high school story of a couple trying to buck the inevitable trend that has cursed many before them. In college, Netflix also has the latest version of Dangerous Liasons.
Elsewhere on Netflix, a Taiwanese horror film looks like a winner, and a family-friendly animated film shows big names on the high seas. If that’s not enough for you, check out our list of 9 new movies and shows to watch this weekend. And you can fill your calendar with the 17 new movies and shows to watch in July 2022 from all the top streamers.
House of Gucci (Prime Video)
Now, say it to us: “Father, son and House of Gucci.” The famous line, which turned out to be improvised by Lady Gaga, may be all you really know about the House of Gucci movie. Luckily, this movie, originally dropped in November 2021 during awards hype season, is finally available on a streaming service.
The film sees Patrizia Reggiani (Gaga), a woman impressed by the Gucci family of fashion, marrying into them through the marriage of Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver). Her interactions with this family and her ambition lead to utter chaos. According to people we know who saw the film, you might think that the cast had different ideas about what director Ridley Scott wanted. Gaga goes for honesty, Jared Leto and Al Pacino lean toward comedy, and Driver pretends he’s in Succession.

Girls in the Picture (Netflix)
It feels like an eternity since Netflix revved up its true crime engines, and Girl in the Picture looks set to be a must-watch for this once-over-served audience. The story begins with a very peculiar photo of How is it looking a man and his daughter, the latter looking utterly miserable and on the verge of tears. It doesn’t look very stable either.
Trying to find out who the girl in the photo – Sharon Marshall – was and where she went became a very complicated case. It all starts with the man in the picture, Franklin Floyd, a fugitive on the run from bank robberies. By Skye Borgman (Kidnapped in plain sight and dead asleep).

Hello, Goodbye and Everything In Between (Netflix)
High school romances seem doomed because college always tends to knock on the door and split even the tenderest of lovers. Clare (Talia Ryder) and Aidan (Jordan Fisher), the main characters of Hello, Goodbye and Everything in Between, know this. They enter the film with the intention of breaking up amicably with one last date.
The film from the producers of To All The Boys chronicles their last date as the two relive the greatest moments of their relationship. This of course leads to frustration as Aidan declares that he loves Clare and doesn’t want to break up. So will they actually finish high school on good terms?

Dangerous Liaisons (Netflix)
Is there a law that someone has to make a new Dangerous Liasons every decade or two? Yes, for those who loved the story from the beginning, loved the popular movie Cruel Intentions, or have never heard this story before, Netflix is bringing this story back for its younger audiences.
This time, the focus is on Célène (Paola Locatelli), who is in a relationship but falls in love with a handsome surfer named Tristan (Simon Rérolle). And just when things are going well, as you might have guessed, she learns that all is not as it seems when Tristan and the school’s Instagram queen, Vanessa (Ella Pellegrini), engage in a vicious emotional chess game under one plug in the ceiling.

Minamata (Hulu)
These days, the mention of Johnny Depp evokes a lot of (often deserved) emotion. Minimata, supposedly his latest film (opens in new tab) reminds some why they used to see the actor in a better light. Depp plays real-life photographer W. Eugene Smith, best known for his photographic essays published in Life Magazine.
Later in his life, Smith became a recluse, but a Japanese translator named Aileen (Minami) urges him to visit the city of Minamata in Japan. The citizens are suffering from mercury poisoning and it seems only Smith’s work can help bring this tragedy to public attention. In the process, Smith uncovers a case of massive corporate greed with ties to those in power.

Summoning (Netflix)
No matter how hellish the reality gets, horror lovers always need more. And Netflix is more than ready to comply this week as it delivers Incantation, a Taiwanese blockbuster that will remind audiences of The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity with its found footage and fourth wall breaking into the camera.
In it, Tsai Hsuan-yen plays Li Ruo-nan, who is still dealing with the aftermath of a religious curse placed on her six years ago. Her daughter is also in danger as the trailer above shows the two trying to survive together. Allegedly inspired by a true story.

The Sea Monster (Netflix)
Netflix’s next family-friendly bet to rival Disney Plus is the adorable-looking The Sea Beast – an oceanic adventure that looks like a hoot. And not only does it come from director Chris Williams (who already has Moana and Big Hero 6 on screen), it also includes two clever casting choices that will make parents want to see it with their kids.
While the film’s star is rumored to be a kid named Maisie (Zaris-Angel Hator) who is hiding on a ship, this film could belong to Karl Urban (The Boys) who has Jacob, the monster hunter, who now has to take care of him. the vote is given by Maisie. Scenes may also be stolen by Jared Harris (Mad Men) voicing Captain Crow.
