The Mummy Returns VFX supervisor reveals why The Scorpion King’s CGI was so bad

The Scorpion King’s performance in The Mummy Returns was notoriously bad, and the film’s VFX supervisor explained why.

When it comes to lists of the worst CGI of all time, The mummy returns Often tops the chart for his hideous recreation of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the Scorpion King. While there have been plenty of films to rival the most ridiculous digital creations that have hit the big screen, it’s worth remembering that they came out the same year that Peter Jackson was unleashed Lord of the rings In the world, The mummy returns is a tough act to beat, and even the film’s VFX supervisor acknowledged that.

In a recent conversation with the Corridor Crew about theirs VFX artists react to bad and great CGI series, John Berton Jr. admitted there were many missteps when it came to creating a digital version of the Scorpion King. He said:

MOVIWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“It was a dark day in my life, when I went on the internet, Google said, ‘Hey, check this out, here’s an interesting thing that might interest you: the worst visual FX shot in history, ever “But wait, this is the scorpion king, do you want me to watch the video?” But I watched it and I felt nauseous…

The greatest thing about the Scorpion King in this film is that we didn’t have the reference that we needed. It’s not really an apology, but it’s an explanation of how things sometimes work in movies. We asked for it of course, we needed a day with Dwayne Johnson to photograph his face and eye detail and all the things you would do. Because he was busy with his incredible WWE career, that wasn’t possible. We had him in Morocco for maybe 3 days to shoot his scenes…

I think if you had all that stuff the animation would work better because it’s supposed to be a bit cartoonish here and I think our decisions about whether the shots were done and ready for the film were influenced by that there was an expectation at the time for it has to reach a certain level. The thing about this sequence is that there’s a bunch of shots that don’t look good, but there’s a bunch of shots that look great…

When you have something like that you always have to get over the shame and reflect on what you learned and I knew we needed references but we couldn’t get them.

Return of the Mummy managed to get away with its horrifying CGI moment

The mummy returns was the sequel to Brendan Fraser’s hit The Mummy, and while the film received generally positive reviews and grossed over $435 worldwide, the film’s finale became the stuff of legend for all the wrong reasons. While the film was Dwayne Johnson’s first big step in creating the money machine he is now, it’s probably not one of the moments he would take in his Sizzle persona.

However, the film spawned another sequel and spin-off centered on Johnson’s character, and all things considered, the franchise is still fondly viewed by many. While the Scorpion King’s performance in the film will never be better to watch, at least the new comments give a reason why it was so bad.
