The screaming goats from Love and Thunder?

Thor: Love and Thunder’s screaming goats are a staple not only of the original comics, but also of ancient mythology and pop culture history.

Marvel has offered audiences several surprises on the big screen over the years, but few have been as eccentric as the screeching goats within Thor: Love and Thunder. While Taika Waititi’s second Thor film received mixed critical reviews, it still hit Thor: Ragnarok at the box office, perhaps in part because of Waititi’s signature sense of humor. But the question remains whether it was Waititi or the original Thor comics themselves that gave viewers screaming goats on screen this summer.

Early in the film, Thor is given the goats by King Yakan (Stephen Curry) for saving the people of the planet Indigarr from an outside threat. through Thor: Love and Thunder, the Thunder God’s steeds shouted across the screen. While Thor (Chris Hemsworth) along with his ex Jane Foster/Mighty Thor (Natalie Portman), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and Korg (Taika Waititi) fought to stop the god killer Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), the goats acted as buddy and means of transport of the group.

Her overbearing yelling was incredibly funny, but you could also argue that after one point it got too much. Regardless of whether they were an added comical relief or just a distraction from the rest Thor: Love and Thunder was also discussed among the viewers. However, the actual origin of the goats is more than a punchline.

While screaming from Thor: Love and Thunder‘s goats found their surprising inspiration in Taylor Swift, the animals themselves can be explained by Marvel history and Norse mythology. Although not specifically mentioned in love and thunderthe goats Toothgrinder and Toothgnasher appeared several times in the comics, their first appearance being in 1976. However, their first appearance in literature is much older and dates back to the ‘Hymiskvi├░a’ Prose Edda in the 12th century. Still, her screaming is Taika Waititi’s invention, an extension of his wacky and sometimes over-the-top comedic style.

According to interviews with Waititi, gate 4Screeching Goats can thank Taylor Swift and her 2012 I Knew You Were Trouble for their origin story. While Thor: Love and Thunder Posted 10 years after the song’s release, the internet meme of a goat screaming over Swift’s chorus has survived the decade. Apparently a post-production staffer rediscovered the goat meme and added the soundtrack to one of the goats’ animation updates, and Waititi loved it so much that the gag made its way into the film.

Even though Thor: Love and Thunder has unanswered questions, the steeds of the god are not among them. Thor’s loyal goats have been by his side since their introduction Thor Annual #5 in 1976. Among their various adventures is Thor’s original taming of the two beasts at Loki’s suggestion Journey into the Secret #623, and a voyage to Hel and Heven, the former in Thor #365 and the latter in original sin #5.1. One of the goats, Toothgnasher, even spent some time with the Punisher Punisher Kill Krew.


through his screaming goats, Thor: Love and Thunder can today claim influences spanning the centuries, from ancient poetry to modern musicality, while remaining wholly consistent with its comic book origins. While the joke might be annoying to some viewers, it really encapsulates the Thor film’s Easter eggs, Marvel references, and eclectic influences that make comics, and Thor in particular, whimsical as they are. In this case it is fitting that the same tone is so prevalent in Waititi’s latest contribution to the Thor film series.
