Thor’s new power has MCU-breaking potential

Thor is showcasing a new force in Thor: Love and Thunder that has the potential to transform the MCU, especially when it comes to Thor allies.

Warning: Spoilers for Thor: Love and Thunder!

Thor (Chris Hemsworth) showed new powers in Thor: Love and Thunder that have the potential to be MCU-breaking. Despite being one of the galaxy’s strongest figures, the God of Thunder found himself after the events of without a clear purpose Avengers: Endgame. That quickly changed when Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) started wreaking havoc in the universe and pulled Thor out of semi-retirement. This also led to a surprise reunion with ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who had adopted the nickname Mighty Thor.

With the help of Jane, Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and Korg (Taika Waititi), Thor tracks down Gorr in the Shadow Realm and uncovers his plan to use eternity to wipe out all the gods. However, Gorr needed Stormbreaker to fulfill the plan, so he tricked Thor into surrendering his weapon by baiting the group with the kidnapped Asgardian children. After an easy defeat that resulted in an injured Valkyrie and a weakened Jane, Thor decided to save the children and stop Gorr alone.

Thor: Love and ThunderThe ending included a dramatic battle with Gorr, Jane’s death, and a wish for eternity that brought back Love (India Rose Hemsworth), Gorr’s daughter. Before that, Thor revealed a power unseen by the god of thunder in the MCU. Hemsworth’s character was able to bestow his Thor powers on the Asgardian children to fight the Shadow Monsters. In the past, a character deemed worthy of wielding Mjolnir was granted the powers of Thor, explaining Jane’s powers as Mighty Thor. Granted, Mjolnir or Stormbreaker had a hand in the kids gaining yellow lightning charged powers. The transmission of abilities comes from Thor himself.

Thor’s new power explained in love and thunder

Chris Hemsworth as Thor in Love and Thunder

Without Mjolnir or Stormbreaker in it Thor: Love and Thunder, Thor relied on Thunderbolt from Zeus (Russell Crowe) as his main weapon, which produced golden-yellow lightning. When Thor found the Asgardian children, he realized he would be outnumbered against the shadow monsters, so he quickly decided to use the children. First, he knew he had to infuse them all with the powers of Thor. After telling the children to find some object that could serve as a weapon, Thor’s yellow current spread through the group, giving all the children glowing yellow eyes and charged weapons.

When Thor’s father Odin originally enchanted Mjolnir he said: “Whoever holds this hammer, if worthy, will possess the power of Thor.” Thor, who has matured and developed his skills over the course of the MCU, repeated this enchantment on the children’s collected weapons, but he made a caveat. After casting the Mjolnir enchantment, Thor added: “…Only for a short time‘, implying that Thor’s powers would wear off and eventually vanish on the children. Still, this proved that Thor could now enchant creatures and weapons at any time.

What Thor’s new power means: Who else could Thor become in the MCU?

Thor’s empowerment has major implications for the character and the MCU as a whole. If the power transfer could work on a group of kids, Thor could essentially use it on everyone and give the character a new trick up his sleeve. When looking at who could potentially become Thor in the MCU, it makes sense to assume that Thor would most like to use it on his current and closest allies. Using the powers on someone like Valkyrie or members of the Guardians of the Galaxy would make sense since they carry signature weapons that Thor could enchant. Technically, any ally of Thor in the MCU could be a candidate for God of Thunder powers with this new ability.

Another plausible candidate for the next Thor would be Gorr’s daughter Love. The end of love and thunder revealed that Thor took on the responsibility of raising love. The young girl and her “Uncle Thor” now fight side by side considering she already possesses immense strength after being revived by Eternity. Thor is already capable of wielding Stormbreaker and could bestow his powers permanently once she is fully ready. With Jane in Valhalla, Thor may want to finally put his superhero days behind him and give Love a chance to fill the void as the new Thor.

The MCU could use an army of Thors for the MCU villains on the horizon. While Kang the Conqueror is rumored to be a major Thanos-level villain, Thor: Love and Thunder implied that Zeus would stop at nothing until Thor is killed, even hiring his son Hercules (Brett Goldstein) to carry out the mission. It may have been the first time Thor has been shown bestowing superhero powers, but it likely won’t be the last.
