What is Mons Venus, the Tampa Strip Club in Girl In The Picture?

Netflix has released its latest true crime document girl in the picture. Buckle up, because this is a dork.

Essentially, the documentary follows the crimes of Franklin Delano Floyd (aka Clarence Hughes, aka Warren Marshal), who is now on death row for murder and kidnapping. But somehow he got away with it for a while, partly because of the different names he went by (but more on that later).

After marrying a woman named Sandi Chipman in 1975, he kidnapped their four children but released three of them.

He retained Suzanne Marie Sevakis, whom he renamed Sharon Marshall and raised as his daughter. That was until he forced her to marry him and changed her name back to Tonya Hughes — while calling himself Clarence Hughes.

At the age of 20, Suzanne (a.k.a. Sharon, a.k.a. Tonya) was found dead in Oklahoma City in 1990 from what appeared to be a hit and run. But no one knows exactly what actually happened, which the film explores.

Sharon Marshall (later also known as Tonya Hughes) was the kidnapped daughter and wife of Franklin Delano Floyd.

Along the way, Floyd forced Suzanne into some disgusting activities — including working at a Tampa strip club. In the document, Suzanne’s friend Heather Lane says Suzanne was soliciting sex for money on her husband/father’s orders, per The daily beast.

Find out ahead of time what was happening around Mons Venus, the club where Suzanne worked, who owns it and if it still exists today.

What does the club have to do with Tonya?

While Tonya dreamed of going to Georgia Tech (where she received a full scholarship) and becoming an aerospace engineer, she could not achieve her goal. After Clarence became pregnant with her boyfriend, she refused to let her go to college.

The two relocated to Tampa, where Floyd forced them to work at Mons Venus, per oxygen. She eventually found a friend in Cheryl Ann Commesso, another stripper.

Floyd later shot and killed Cheryl at his home in the Golden Lantern trailer park, where he lived with Tonya and her son Michael. Cheryl’s remains were reportedly found scattered along Interstate 25 in Pinellas County in 1997 Tampa Bay Times.

Is Mons Venus still there?

Oh yeah. Mons Venus has been in business for more than 40 years and is thriving.
