Making meaningful friends at work can be challenging. Working relationships are often tenuous and more about networking than real camaraderie. On the contrary, when Park Seo-joon met co-actors Park Hyung-sik and BTS’ V on the sets of Hwarang: The Poet-Warrior YouthThey bonded well enough to become good friends. During and after filming, their on-screen camaraderie matured into a family-like bond off-screen; the impetus behind the formation of the Wooga Squad. In a competitive society where we value career advancement over interpersonal relationships with peers, Park Seo-joon went ahead and formed the group, subsequently adding his longtime friend, rapper-record producer, singer-songwriter, Peakboy, and fellow actor Choi added Woo-sik to it. Since then, the members have stood by each other and garnered media attention for their affinity and bromance.
Wooga Squad is now more in the spotlight than ever thanks to the unveiling of a teaser for IN THE SOOP: Friendship, with the celebrity group. The word “friendcation” alludes to friends on vacation, and the visuals confirm this. The show is expected to delve into the lives of the superstars while they’re on short vacations and engaging in fun activities away from their regular routines. Ahead of this installment of the legendary Korean variety show, we caught K-pop megastars BTS and acclaimed K-pop band Seventeen perform IN THE SOOP. The concept of the show follows the cast in a quiet place, away from the busy city life, where the band members have no concrete plans and can participate in a series of activities that reflect the series’ slogan: “Between everyday life and rest.” I am excited to see how this idea plays out on the Wooga Squad.
In conversation with The guard, Park Seo-joon spoke about the importance of this group in his life. “They are really good friends to me and very reassuring,” he said, adding, “Not only do we share the same values, thoughts and perspectives, but we also operate in similar industries and can therefore seek advice. We try to comfort each other as people because what I’m going through might be something the others might be going through in the future.” Because they appreciate each other, the group members often share posts of their time together on social media. Likewise, they tend to use every available tool to support each other’s respective endeavors. Take V, who contributed the song “Christmas Tree” to Choi’s drama Our beloved summeror Peakboy, who used the entire troupe in the music video for his song “Gyopo Hairstyle”.
V, the youngest member of the group, is often the center of attention. noted Park Hyung-sik in an interview with the Japanese publication Mocha henshu that he is surprised to see someone so close to him adored by people around the world. “To me, Taehyung is still my sweet little brother. He hasn’t changed since we first met. Work-wise, he’s a pro, but usually he’s just a regular kid.” During a Q&A with the cast of Hwarang, both Park Seo-joon and Park Hyung-sik revealed that V is too cute and aspires to be manly like her. The K-pop idol has reiterated that the members of Wooga Squad act as an unwavering support system for one another. Despite coming from many different walks of life in the entertainment industry, their closeness and brotherhood keep them united. The four-part spin-off series IN THE SOOP: Friendships The depiction of this relationship will be entertaining I think. The show will premiere this month. According to insiders, the series airs every Friday on JTBC and is available to watch on-demand on Disney+ Asia.
